Meave Darroux, Ex - CEO of Brilliant Parents
I am an independent parenting practitioner, author, speaker and consultant. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than supporting parents and helping them improve their parenting style and ultimately, improving the relationship with their children.
However, my path has been long, involving much inner work, many setbacks, gains in resilience and ultimately, profound transformation.
Growing up, I was on the receiving end of what can only be described as the best and worst of two polar opposite parenting styles, so I know firsthand the impact that both positive and negative parenting can have on a child.
Like millions of parents who parented the way they were parented, I was no different. My parenting style would pivot between strict and soft depending on the circumstance with no clear strategy or direction.
Needless to say, I made countless mistakes. So much so that it propelled me to study the business of parenting and to research “what was the difference that made the difference”.
After 17 years of study and work, my parenting style is now completely different, however, it took much self-reflection and a deep dive into the parenting style of my parents and how they were parented. I had the privilege to support thousands of parents with the charity I visualised and created, Brilliant Parents. My lived experience has enabled me to empathise and understand when parents are feeling overwhelmed and under significant pressure.
My life as a parenting support professional started in 2008 when I became a Parent Support Advisor at Northwood Secondary school in Hillingdon. There, I was able to see firsthand the impact of the internationally acclaimed, evidence-based Triple P Programme. I provided extensive parental support through one-on-one consultations and spearheaded the Triple P Programme in partnership with Bell Farm Christian Centre, significantly bolstering parental competencies and the school's parent engagement ethos.
I went on to become the manager of the Pro-Parenting Department in 2011 at Bell Farm Christian Centre and became accredited in a wide range of the Triple P programmes.
There, I managed the department and delivered the Triple P programme to Hillingdon parents for four years. I have delivered parent support in the London Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Harrow, Haringey, Hillingdon and Westminster. I have also supported parents via the North East London NHS Foundation Trust and female inmates at HM Holloway and Downview prisons.
In conclusion, improving children’s lives by supporting parents is my calling.
